“3G iPhone Ad vs Real World: A performance comparison” is a side-by-side video comparison of all the actions performed in an iPhone 3G television advertisement, and the video’s author attempting to perform the same tasks while standing across the street from an Apple store in Boston with a full-strength 3G connection. The results should make iPhone 3G owners feel just a little bit deceived. I have been using an iPhone 3G since it came out. It’s extremely useful and far ahead of many other phones, but I too have been disappointed with its speed. I find the battery conservation effects of disabling 3G to be more valuable than its speed 90% of the time — I keep 3G off except for short bursts of multimedia-laden browsing such as sessions with YouTube and Flickr. And I have never had GPS zoom in on my location nearly as fast as it does in the commercial… it has only come close a few times in midtown Manhattan.
